Cade--August 2004

08-03-2004:  Stroller
So we've noticed in the past few weeks that our stroller was making a clicking sound as it rolled. After poking around last night, I discovered that the brake isn't fully retracting because, well, some pieces have deformed. Yay, I called up the manufacturer and they are going to send a replacement axle out, no charge. Mind you, the warranty information I had indicated that shipping was the responsibility of the consumer, so this is an extra bonus. I suspect, having looked at the pieces that are problematic, that they discovered that this is a design issue and needs to be revisited.

In other news, Cade loves zippers. Leslie was playing with a zipper in a book of his, and he was laughing whenever she jerked it open or closed.

08-07-2004:  Crawling
Here's a cute picture of Cade crawling on the bedroom floor.

08-08-2004:  Fell off the wagon again
I figured this would happen eventually. Cade finally fell out of bed. See, while Leslie and I are in bed with him, he usually sleeps between us, which is safe. But when I get up, he could roll off my end. I put down three towels to cushion any landings he makes, but apparently he managed to fall anyway. I think that what happened is that he turned himself sideways (head to Leslie, feet towards my end of the bed) and then sat up and went forward off the bed. I heard a thump, came running from the den, to see him face down, his head on the carpet (past the towels actually). He didn't cry at all, so I guess he must have caught himself.

I comforted him a little anyway, and then showed him how to semi-safely slide off the bed with his stomach to the bed. He seemed really interested in it; I doubt he could have understood what I was showing him the first time, but well, if he's doing something unsafe, then I have to start training him out of it now. Either that or he never sleeps with us until he can climb a bit, and I don't think we're ready to deal with that yet.

As for the "fell off the wagon" bit, Leslie had a margarita at Chevy's last night--her first in about two years. So of course I blame her for giving Cade a hangover. ;-)

We also walked to CompUSA later on.  Cade fell asleep in my arms while we were there.  On the way back, we stopped for Cade to look at the fountains.

08-19-2004:  The Biggest of Them All...
...or "My Ten-Month-Old is Bigger Than Your Ten-Month-Old"

Cade had his doctor visit today. Vitals:

Height: 30 inches (!)
Weight: 22 lbs 1.5 oz
Head: 18 inches

He's only about 60th-75th percentile on weight, but according to the nurse, he is "off the scale" in height. In our What To Expect The First Year book, he actually looks closer to 95th percentile. Still, very tall for his age. No wonder we keep noticing that his legs are scrunched a bit in his rear-facing car seat!

He also got whatever shot he missed last time (due to it being in short supply). His next visit is at 15 months, and he will need a whopping 5 shots. That's gonna hurt.

During his appointment he managed to drink out of his sippy cup by himself (which is still a rare event for us). He's also getting a lot better at saying "Dada" and "Dad", and sometimes we think maybe he means it. Just a bit ago he was in the bedroom and crawled out of the room to his diaper mat, whereupon he began to cry. Turned out he needed a diaper change. Coincidence? We'd like to think not, but that's probably parental pride talking.

08-21-2004:  Teeth
As far as we can tell, Cade's top lateral incisors have been in (just barely) for at least a couple days now. It probably isn't long until the festival of drool and crying commences with the lowers. Apparently the teeth mostly come in in sets of 4 (no surprise) and the typical span between teething is 4 months. Well, he got his first 4 teeth around 2 months ago, so maybe this is wrong, or the first teeth come in quicker. And as they say, timing of teething is not really predictable anyway.

Here is a picture of Cade at the coffee table, and one of him sleeping near Timmy.

Here is a picture of Cade in his crib.

08-28-2004:  Tales of Anime
We went to the Tales of Anime convention.  You can find pictures here, including Cade dressed as baby Koenma from Yu Yu Hakusho!  (The rest of the family is dressed up as characters from that anime as well.)  Keep checking back, I should soon have links and/or other people's pictures as well.
