Cade--February 2004

02-01-2004:  Super Bowl Cade
Cade helped us watch the Super Bowl tonight.  Leslie thinks he was watching because we were.  He was paying more attention to us though, and to trying to speak.  And when it got towards the very close end of the game, that was when he was realizing more and more that he needed a diaper change.  Leslie distracted him with milk (okay, it was at my suggestion, once she said "he's probably hungry too") and we managed to see the New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers before whisking him to the diaper changing mat.  We were worried we might have to hold out into overtime.  Then again, as we aren't sports fanatics, it would not have been a great loss--it's just that when you think the end of the game is close, you pay more attention.  I managed to miss about half of the game, yet only was away for a single extra point.  That's what I classify as a good Super Bowl.

02-04-2004:  Squeal!  Squeal like a pig!
We had more fun with Cade's butterfly balloon (the one from the hospital) last night. Leslie kept tying it to his foldable mirror; Timmy ate through the ribbon twice.

During a diaper change we decided to change Cade into a new shirt, and Leslie had it covering his face for several seconds (usually we make an effort not to cover his face, like the books suggest). Well, when she uncovered his face, he brightened up and actually gave a squeal of delight. Leslie liked it so much, she repeated this a total of four times. Cade really liked the peek-a-boo thing.

02-07-2004:  Cereal sleeper
Tonight we fed Cade cereal for the first time.  We got about three tiny partial spoonfuls into his mouth, most of which dribbled out (it's mostly breast milk with a little cereal mixed in), before he fell asleep.  Leslie had just fed him to calm him, so...
                                                                                    experiment...failed.

(We tried again a couple hours later, with little success.  Maybe three more spoonfuls.)

By the way, this is the coolest diaper ever!

Yes, it is real!  I admit, I hid all the other letters via careful use of the Huggies diaper tabs, but there are no alterations in that image, just cropping and resizing.  By the way, it was Leslie and Kathy who noticed this giraffe diaper previously (and they took pictures with my old camera).

Also, here are pictures from the last month or so, including the hospital and so on.

02-09-2004:  Cade starts to sit up
Yesterday was a hell of a day. We discovered a few fleas on the cats (actually the first one we found was on one of Cade's thermal blankets), so the day became a day of applying the anti-flea medication to the cats and then cleaning everything up. Cade was very helpful and let us work a lot of the day.

Still though, he's having his very clingy moments, especially in the evenings. It's been difficult to get anything done since he'll often start crying as soon as we set him down. I discovered last night that he's more amenable to being set down in the beanbag chair than most other places; good lighting, good field of view, but you have to work to entertain him still.

At any rate, while I was holding him, keeping him in kind of a reclined sitting position, he started sitting up! He actually pulled himself forward and started to flop too far forward. Leslie noticed the same after I went to bed (I guess she was too busy to catch it when I told her, or maybe she was down with laundry).

One other little amusing bit: One time with Cade in the beanbag chair, I wiped his drool, and as I pulled the burp rag away, he grasped it! Good grip, too. I told him how impressed I was (after the stress of the day, it nearly brought me to tears, being impressed and amused at once).

02-14-2004:  Wow
Our little boy is trying harder to sit forward, and liking being on his back less and less. Also, while we had him watching PBS for awhile yesterday, there was a "Wow!" on TV, followed by a very similar sound from Cade. We're pretty sure he had a successful attempt to mimic the TV.

Read more about the day on LiveJournal.

02-22-2004:  Cade's sense of balance
He's doing more now where he'll try to sit forward if he's reclined. He'll still pitch forward too far and needs a hand to stop him from face-planting into the love seat or whatever. What was interesting was that yesterday, sometimes he would lean forward but to one side or the other, and have his hand out, on the surface of the love seat, which helped him a bit to catch himself and maintain balance.

Also, he's more grabby while being held; when I hold him upright in my arms, he grasps whatever he can. I experimented yesterday with leaning him back somewhat, and he was pulling tightly enough to keep himself from falling backward. So presumably he's learning a bit more about balance.

He's still being just as vocal, loud when excited, and loud when unhappy, and it's hard to tell the difference sometimes.

Cade had an appointment on Friday (02/02/2004), and here were the stats:
Weight: 16 lbs 2 oz
Height: 26 1/4"
Head: 16 3/4"

What else? He ate a tiny bit of his cereal yesterday (yes, at his appointment on Friday, they were amazed that he's almost entirely breast-fed), and today, I was holding him while eating apple sauce, and he was staring at it, so we decided to try giving him a little. He had a couple teensy bits of it. I think he liked it, but he's still not sure about non-milk. Of course, technically you're not supposed to do this, but we're not that worried since we don't have food allergies in the family. Guess this is one of the little joys of being a parent: having the freedom to decide how to raise your own kid.

Oh also, we put Cade into his new stroller.

02-23-2004:  Tonight Cade sleeps with the fishes
Since today is Leslie's actual birthday (we celebrated on Saturday), and she got a cash gift from her dad, we went to Sushi Lover's for dinner. Cade was sound asleep when we got there (the magic of the car ride), and as this is a sushi bar where the sushi goes around on plates inside little boats floating through a canal of running water, thus came the title. I got a groan from Leslie, but the person seating us laughed.

When Cade did wake up he enjoyed watching the boats, and once he got annoyed with his car seat, Leslie picked him up for awhile, eating tuna rolls one-handed for awhile. Before her dessert (tempura green tea ice cream) arrived, I took him and held him. The couple next to us was amused seeing him. "He has such big eyes!" said the woman.

Cade is getting stronger more quickly than I'd anticipated. He is much more powerful with his attempts to sit up, and now is happy to play games where he holds my fingers in his hands and I move him back and forth, rocking him in a sitting position and letting him correct his movements a bit. Also, we put him on his stomach, and now his mobility is such that he can turn, and reach while on his stomach. He was reaching for the tag in the butt of Tigger, very cute. He turned about ninety degrees before he got annoyed and wanted to be picked up.

02-25-2004:  Cade's turtle book
I gave Cade his turtle book to read.  He had a blast.  Thank goodness it doesn't fit in his mouth.
