The Atlanta Airport Has Ants--I
just wonder how this little thing got funded...
Elevators and Other Fruitless Pursuits--The
hotels look pretty cool, but they just don't have enough elevators for DragonCon
A Miscellany of One--a
random pic
Outdoors? I never knew it existed...--we
didn't go out much and we have the pictures to prove it!
Worship the Abrams--Sluggy-related
pictures
Kids in the Hall--costumes
seen outside the masquerade
Dangerous Double Agents and Masters of Disguise--the
masquerade (though our pictures came out pretty poorly)
Film scans--I
got my film pictures developed already! Lots of pictures of masquerade
contestants from behind stage! Plus lots of Leslie
in Cenobite getup and a good picture of me as The
Shadow.
About the trip
DragonCon was a blast. I didn't sleep at all. Honest! Well
okay, not more than 5 hours a night anyway. Every night I got to bed at
the same time as everyone else in our crowded room, but I always got up first to
get a shower. It got a little rough by the end of the trip, but at least I
got some decent sleep on the flight back.
Let's see...people I saw:
- Harlan Ellison--rode the elevator up once with him "directing"
us (I think he likes to feel like he's in charge, as if anyone has power
over the elevator gods).
- James Doohan--After a rushed trip to the dealer's room I made it to his
panel just in time for him to arrive to a crowded room, and I couldn't hear
anything. Gave up and left, got a fuzzy useless picture. He
didn't seem so much with it but he certainly made the crowd laugh.
Hope I have some life left in me at that age.
- John Rhys-Davies--Ran past him a few times. Heck, it's an honor to
be in the same room with this guy. Some panels too.
- Pete Abrams--Got him to sign some books, saw him belly-sign some happy
girls. Went to the supposed dinner with him, but we ended up at
another table across the room, in a pretentious, posh restaurant (Dailey's), with no
vegetarian dishes for one of our friends, plus we were already blowing off
our other friends. Bagged out on that one, got Chinese much later with
our other friends. Saw him the next
night right in front of us to get Dairy Queen for dinner. (It's not
just ice cream, you know)
I also saw some great panels:
- Iron Artist, hosted by Peter David and Harlan Ellison. These two
managed to make watching artists from several rows away an interesting
experience. Don Bluth beat out Larry Ellmore. Does this mean
Dirk the Daring can whoop Snarf's butt?
- A couple of readings with Peter David. Hey, last year Leslie got him
to sign my Psi-Man novels (the ones with Fabio on the cover, and the name
"David Peters"). He has some very entertaining work. I
recommend the Young Justice (especially the upcoming Christmas one) and the
Sir Apropos of Nothing.
- A Dark Angel panel. It was interesting hearing about the alternative
pilot (which I didn't pick up down in the dealer room), and enjoyable except
for the dork who asked how long the gestation would be if Max got pregnant
and gave birth to a litter of kitties. They actually had to explain
about gene splicing being selective. You don't just toss a salad of
chromosomes, drink a pint of Guinness and do the Pan Dance and hope the
black magic works this time around, after all.
- Jerry Doyle skipped out on a panel of his that I went to, so instead they
showed us movie previews and gave us free stuff like Harry Potter
t-shirts (gave mine to Leslie), From Hell letter openers (they're
sharp!), and Monsters, Inc. posters (couldn't accept something that
big).
- Most of a Lord of the Rings Q&A panel with John Rhys-Davies.
He mentioned some of his experiences, in particular with having a bad
reaction to the Gimli makeup. (It's not all fame and glory,
right?)
- John Rhys-Davies also participated in a presentation of Guards!
Guards! by Terry Pratchett. I would have gotten it better if I'd
had more sleep. It directly preceded the masquerade, so I wonder if
the room was even fuller than it would otherwise have been.
I got some decent stuff, including D&D Forgotton Realms books, some older
D&D stuff, Sluggy and other books, and even my first (and maybe last) Magic
cards, which literally were placed in a toilet. At twenty for a buck, who
wouldn't go fishing? Don't care how you play, but we think the pictures
are pretty anyway. Besides, no sense in getting addicted--how many
of my friends failed out of CMU that way?
